Special Projects

In 2019, 2020 and 2022, I worked on three special projects with the Northeastern University School of Journalism. Along with a class of talented journalists, I reported on-the-ground in Cuba, Panama and Puerto Rico, and helped produce two full websites complete with our stories. Cuba: Behind the Blockade, won a 2020 Boston/New England Emmy (National Student Production Award) under the College/University Magazine Program category.

Detrás del Bloqueo: Behind the Embargo is a production of the School of Journalism at Northeastern University. Twelve students under the direction of Professor Carlene Hempel reported these stories in the spring of 2019 from Boston and Cuba. Their work proves that in spite of a long-standing embargo, the people of Cuba had something to say, and we listened.

Panamá de Cerca: Up Close at the Continental Crossroads is a production of the School of Journalism at Northeastern University. Twelve students under the direction of Professor Carlene Hempel reported these stories in the spring of 2020 from Boston and Panama. Their work and the range of topics covered here showcase the people and places of this beautiful transcontinental country, and some of the challenges it faces ahead.

Portraits of Puerto Rico: Commonwealth in the Caribbean is a production of the School of Journalism at Northeastern University. Twelve students, under the direction of Professor Carlene Hempel, reported these stories in the spring of 2022 from Boston and Puerto Rico. Their work and the range of topics covered here showcase the people, places and issues facing this beautiful unincorporated U.S. territory.
